DC Museum-DC Equipment-Firefighting Equipment-All Purpose Nozzle (APN)

The two standard Navy firefighting nozzles were the 1 ½- and 2 ½-inch all purpose nozzles (APN). Both nozzles were brass and could produce a solid water stream on the upper outlet and a high-velocity fog on the lower outlet with the spud fog nozzle tip inserted. This tip was part of the nozzle assembly and was attached with a short brass chain. The APN could obtain low-velocity fog if the spud fog nozzle tip was replaced with an applicator (either 4- or 10-foot for the 1 ½-inch APN for interior firefighting, or 12-foot for 2 ½-inch APN for topside firefighting). The nozzles operated most efficiently when the water pressure at the nozzle was maintained at or near 100 psi.
