Secondary Drainage System

Secondary drainage systems served spaces fore and aft of the main drainage system. Sometimes the piping was connected to the main drainage system. In most instances it had its own pumps, eductors and piping system, with a smaller capacity than the main drainage system. On destroyers, spaces had permanently-installed submersible pumps; they were generally located in crews’ berthing spaces, with suction piping, valves, etc. In carriers, battleships and heavy cruisers, high-capacity eductors were also installed. These operated at a rate of 750 gpm at 150 pounds pressure and were designed to pump 1,200 gpm, with a 15-foot suction lift against a 29-foot head. They were actuated by electricity-driven centrifugal drainage pumps that were also fire pumps.
