The portable oxygen acetylene cutting outfit was used to cut
holes in steel decks or bulkheads so that a nozzle or applicator
could be inserted to fight a fire. The outfit could also be used
to cut away mangled steel debris that hindered access to fire or
rescue. It could cut ferrous metals up to 1 inch thick. These
cutting outfits were used for emergencies only. The outfit
weighed 65 pounds. The oxygen cylinders had a capacity
of 22 cubic feet, and each cylinder was charged to 1,800
psi. The acetylene cylinder had a capacity of 10 cubic
feet and was charged to 250 psi. The preset regulators
gave a controlled ratio of 25 psi oxygen and 5 psi
acetylene. The hoses of the cutting outfit were 5 feet
long. The acetylene hose were always red in color and
had left-handed threads. The oxygen hose was always
green or black in color and had right-handed threads.
The torch was a medium cutting torch with a number 2
tip. When the unit was fully charged, it could be used
for 30 minutes |
