The oxygen cylinder type Navy rescue breathing apparatus
had an air cooler and a regenerator cylinder filled with
one pound of soda lime. The regenerator cylinder
absorbed the carbon dioxide and water vapors from the
air, allowing only purified air to enter the breathing
bag. Expended cardoxide chemicals had to be handled and
disposed of with care when being replaced with new soda
lime chemicals. Soda lime chemicals were supplied in a
1-pound metal or glass container. When the oxygen
cylinder type Navy rescue breathing apparatus was phased
out in the early 1950s, remaining supplies of soda lime
were turned in for disposal.
