The Navy Mark I gas mask was adapted by the Navy to
enable greater protection of personnel while onboard war
ships in the event of a chemical attack. The early
development of the Mk I, in 1917, was similar to the
German field gas mask. It had a filter canister mounted
directly to the mask’s face piece. Unlike the German
mask, the Mk I used a wide rubber, flapper-type exhale
valve that protruded from the filter inlet point. It
used nose clips and a snorkel-like mouthpiece on the
inside .The mask was issued in a metal carrying canister
similar to its German counterpart. It was also called
the Navy mouth canister mask
