USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) and USS LEYTE GULF (CG 55), Collision, October 1996 |
On October 14, 1996, the Ticonderoga class cruiser, USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) collided with the Nimitz class carrier, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) while conducting operations off the coast of North Carolina. The incident occurred as the carrier, without prior warning, reversed its engines while the USS Leyte Gulf was behind it and slammed into the cruiser's bow. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. |
