USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Accidental Missile Launch, 2 October 1992 On October 2, 1992, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) accidentally fired two Sea Sparrow missiles at the Turkish destroyer TCG Muavenet while both ships along with other NATO units were participating “Exercise Display Determination 1992”, a combined forces naval exercise. Due to misinterpretation and a lack of communication, the USS Saratoga (CV 60) mistakenly fired live missiles during a simulated missile attack exercise. One missile went through the Muavenet’s Bridge and Combat Information Center. The misfire resulted in 5 casualties including the Commanding Officer and numerous injuries onboard the Turkish Destroyer. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Fire, June 1990 USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Steam Valve Rupture, 17 June 1982 On June 17, 1982, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) suffered from a 1,200lb steam valve rupture while undergoing overhaul at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, PA. There were no personnel casualties but 10 injuries reported. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Fires, 20 October 1980 The Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) experienced five small fires from October 20th - 26th, 1980, while undergoing major overhaul at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, PA. The causes of the fires are suspected to be due to arson. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS SARATOGA (CV 60) and USNS WACCAMAW (T-AO 109), Collision, 21 November 1978 On November 21, 1978, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) collided with the fleet oiler USNS Waccamaw (T-AO 109) while conducting refueling operations 50 miles south off the coast of Crete, Greece. There were no personnel casualties or injuries and only minor damage reported. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Collision, 6 October 1977 On October 6, 1977, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) collided with the Austrian container ship Ville D’Orient while transiting the Straits of Messina. There were no personnel casualties or injuries and only minor damage reported. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Fire, 23 August 1977 On August 23, 1977, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) suffered a fire when an aerosol can exploded in the #2 incinerator as the ship was en route to the Straits of Messina. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS SARATOGA (CV 60) and USS MISSISSINEWA (AO 144), Collision, 15 December 1975 On December 15, 1975, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) collided with the Neosho class fleet oiler USS Mississinewa (AO 144) while conducting an underway replenishment off the coast of Florida. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Fire, 22 September 1973 On September 22, 1973, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) suffered a fire on the third deck between the flight deck and hangar bay while in dry dock at Norfolk, VA. It took nine hours to extinguish the fire. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Fire, October 1972 In October 1972, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) suffered a fire in the boiler room while conducting a port visit in Singapore. There were 3 personnel casualties, 12 injuries and slight damage to the carrier. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Flooding, 20 August 1971 On August 20, 1971, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) experienced flooding in an engine room while underway in the eastern Mediterranean after leaving Athens, Greece. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Fire, 23 January 1961 On January 23, 1961, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) suffered a fire caused by a ruptured oil line while operating 100 miles off the coast of Piraeus, Greece. There were 7 personnel casualties and 23 injuries as a result of the fire. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Fire, 30 May 1960 On May 30, 1960, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) experienced an oil-fed flash fire while docked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported but the fire resulted in the scorching of the carrier’s amidships hull. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Collision, 25 May 1960 On May 25, 1960, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) collided with the German freighter Bernd Leonhardt while conducting nighttime operations off the coast of North Carolina. The angled deck of the USS Saratoga (CV 60) collided into the bridge of the freighter which resulted in heavy damage to the Bernd Leonhardt. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS SARATOGA (CV 60), Explosion/Flooding, 14 October 1958 On October 14, 1958, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 60) suffered an explosion that resulted in the flooding of the engineering room while in port Jacksonville, FL. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. |
