HONOLULU, Jan. 8 -- A Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine that had been conducting operations underwater at the time, ran aground about 350 miles south of Guam. Navy and Coast Guard aircraft from Guam were en route to monitor the submarine and assist if needed, the Navy said. A sailor who was critically injured when a nuclear submarine ran aground died, and 23 others were injured, the Navy reported as the USS San Francisco reached port in Guam under its own power. Navy medical personnel from Guam boarded the submarine to treat injuries, which included broken bones, lacerations, bruises and a back injury, the Navy said. The submarine has a crew of 137.

The USS San Francisco (SSN 711) sustained severe damage, but there were no reports of damage to its reactor plant, which was operating normally, the Navy said. The 360-foot submarine was headed back to its home port in Guam, where it was expected to arrive Monday
