USS MONTEREY (CG 61) and USNS SPICA (T-AFS 9), Collision, 17 March 2005 Ships Collide A Navy cruiser and a Military Sealift Command combat stores ship continue to operate in the Persian Gulf following a “minor collision” that took place during a March 17 underway replenishment operation, the Navy said. No injuries were reported aboard the cruiser Monterey or the USNS Spica as a result of the collision, which took place at roughly 4:45 p.m. local time, according to U.S. 5th Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Breslau. The impact caused “superficial damage” to both ships, which remain seaworthy and able to continue their respective missions, he said. Both vessels are based in Norfolk, VA. No further details were available. The cause of the collision is under investigation, Breslau said.
