USS JACKSONVILLE (SSN 699), Fire, 21 December 2004 Medics Treat Two After Fire on Sub PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD - A small fire broke out on board the nuclear submarine USS Jacksonville Monday afternoon, slightly injuring two people on board. A shipyard firefighter and a sailor were treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation and immediately released, according to public affairs officer Danna Eddy. Around 12:40 p.m., the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Fire Department responded to Dry Dock 2, where the small fire broke out in a front compartment of the submarine. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes, Eddy said. All nonessential personnel were evacuated from the ship, currently homeported at the shipyard for an engineered refueling overhaul. The reactor was never in any danger, Eddy said. An investigation into the cause of the fire is in progress and could not be publicly discussed. Local fire departments assisted.
