USS IOWA (BB 61), Explosion/Fire, 19 April 1989 |
| On April 19, 1989, an explosion onboard the battleship USS Iowa (BB 61) ripped through the ship’s #2 sixteen-inch gun turret while underway off the coast of Puerto Rico. The cause of the explosion is unknown and there were 47 personnel killed as a result of the casualty. |
