USS INDEPENDENCE USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), Class A Fire/AM1D LOX Shop, August 1991 USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), Fire, 15 August 1981 On August 15, 1981, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) experienced a fire in the air operations and carrier control approach spaces during overhaul at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, VA. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), Fire, 28 March 1979 On March 28, 1979, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) suffered from a control room fire while operating in the Roosevelt Roads Area off the coast of Puerto Rico. There were no personnel casualties reported but 30 crewmembers suffered from minor smoke inhalation. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) and USS TRUCKEE (AO 147), Collision, 20 April 1977 On April 20, 1977, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) collided with the Neosho class oiler USS Truckee (AO 147) while conducting an underway replenishment in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The cause of the collision was due to a loss of steering control onboard the oiler. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) and USS DENEBOLA (AF 56), Collision, 20 November 1975 On November 20, 1975, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) collided with the refrigerated stores ship USS Denebola (AF 56) while conducting a nighttime underway replenishment in the North Sea. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported and only minor damage to both ships. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), Boiler Explosion, 15 June 1975 On June 15, 1975, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) experienced a boiler flareback explosion which damaged two boilers and adjacent uptakes while in port Norfolk, VA. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), Fire, 5 April 1973 On April 5, 1973, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) suffered from a fire in the catapult ventilation system while conducting operations in the Virginia Capes area. The fire was extinguished in 45 minutes and there were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), Flight Deck Fire, September 1969 In September 1969, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) suffered a fire when two fuel tanks broke off during a launch and ignited while the ship was conducting operations in the Northern Atlantic. The fire was extinguished 48 seconds later by a MB-5 fire engine. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) and USS WRANGELL (AE 12), Collision, 13 April 1968 On April 13, 1968, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) collided with the ammunition ship USS Wrangell (AE 12) while conducting an underway replenishment off the coast of South Carolina. There were no personnel casualties or injuries but slight damage to both ships was reported. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), Fire, 13 December 1965 On December 13, 1965, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) suffered from a fire when an aircraft fuel tank ruptured on take off while conducting operations southeast of Norfolk, VA. There were no personnel casualties but 15 injuries reported as a result of the fire. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) and USS DIAMOND HEAD (AE 19), Collision, 27 April 1961 On April 27, 1961, the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) collided with the Mount Hood class ammunition ship USS Diamond Head (AE 19) while conducting operations in the Caribbean Sea. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported but the ammunition ship suffered flooding in two compartments. USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), Jet Crash and Fire, 25 August 1959 On August 25, 1959, a jet crashed into the rear of the Forrestal class aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV 62) and caused a fire while the ship was conducting operations off the coast of Norfolk, VA. There was one casualty reported as a result of the accident. |
