USS DETROIT (AOE 4) and USS NICHOLSON (DD 982), Collision, 27 August 2000 |
On August 27, 2000, the Sacramento class fast combat support ship, USS Detroit (AOE 4) collided with the Spruance class destroyer USS Nicholson (DD 982) while conducting nighttime refueling operations off the coast of Norfolk, VA. There were no personnel casualties but a few minor injuries to crewmembers onboard the USS Nicholson (DD 982). The destroyer also sustained slight damage on the port side of the helicopter hangar. |
