USS CORAL SEA (CV 43), Collision, 11 April 1985

On April 11, 1985, the Midway class aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea (CV 43) collided with the Ecuadorian tanker NAPO while conducting air operations southeast of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The collision tore a 30-foot hole in the carrier’s bow and damaged some equipment. The NAPO suffered holes above the waterline and dumped 7,600 barrels of oil before reaching port for repairs. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported as a result of the collision.

On December 17, 1984, the Midway class aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea (CV 43) experienced an engine room fire during overhaul at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, VA. The fire was extinguished in one hour. There were no personnel casualties but three injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

On November 20, 1978, the Midway class aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea (CV 43) experienced a fire while moored at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA. The fire caused damage to the medical and dental spaces. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported as a result of the fire.

On August 22, 1969, the Midway class aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea (CV 43) collided with a tug and a Navy barge in the San Francisco Bay, CA. There were no personnel casualties but one barge crewman was injured.

USS CORAL SEA (CV 43), Explosion, 25 October 1967

On October 25, 1967, the Midway class aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea (CV 43) suffered a Zuni rocket explosion while conducting operations in the Tonkin Gulf off Vietnam. There were no personnel casualties but nine injuries reported as a result of the explosion.

On October 10, 1967, the Midway class aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea (CV 43) collided with the auxiliary explosives ship USS Mount Katmai (AE 16) while conducting underway replenishment in the Tonkin Gulf. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported.

On May 21, 1966, while transiting in port to San Diego, CA, the Midway class aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CV 43) bumped the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LPH 2), which was anchored out in the harbor. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported.

On February 3, 1963, the Midway class aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea (CV 43) ran aground near the mouth of the Oakland Estuary while heading in port Naval Air Station Alameda, CA. It took nine hours and 10 tugs to pull the USS Coral Sea (CV 43) into deeper water. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported.
