USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64), Fire, August 1988 On August 2, 1988, the Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier, USS Constellation (CV 64) experienced an engine room fire caused by a fuel leak while conducting operations off the West Coast. The fire began with an explosion in one of the engine rooms and was extinguished 9 hours later after more explosions occurred due to the heat of the initial fire. There were no personnel casualties but 20 injuries reported as a result. |
