THE STORAGE OF SEMI-SAFE AND DANGEROUS MATERIALS

  1. Semi-safe materials: that is, materials which are considered safe so long as contained in unopened, non-leaking containers, it being understood that in event of leakage, any spilled material would be cleaned up with reasonable promptness and the leaking containers disposed of.
    1. Except as otherwise specified herein, all materials classified as semi-safe, in article 30-1(2) shall be stowed in the paint and inflammable liquid storeroom, or storerooms, wherever practicable, such storerooms are located below the full load waterline, near either end of the vessel, not adjacent to a magazine.
      1. And further shall have natural supply ventilation, terminating 6’ above the deck, also shall be provided with permanently installed exhaust system, to include flame arresters and automatic control switches and baffles.
      2. There shall be an installed CO2 system of sufficient size to care for space concerned.

  2. Dangerous materials, that is, compressed gases of any type, and materials involving considerable fire hazard or having other dangerous characteristics whether or not in sealed containers:
    1. Except as otherwise allowed or specified herein or in articles following all materials classified as dangerous in articles 30-1(3) shall be stowed in the paint and inflammable liquids storeroom or storerooms. Liquids placed in this storeroom shall preferably be stowed in 5-gallon containers. Small quantities of 16 MM and 35 MM motion picture film of nitrate-base type may be sorted in the training aids locker. Large quantities are stowed in a storeroom protected by sprinkling or in the paint and inflammable liquids storerooms. The storage of gasoline is covered by Chapter 15, Bureau of Ships Manual, and the storage of compressed or industrial gases is covered by the Bureau of Ships Manual, Chap. 23.
