SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR MEN WORKING IN CONFINED SPACES
- Confined spaces shall be aired for a 24-hour period whenever possible before working parties are allowed to enter. Airing reduces the danger of toxic gases.
- Before entering a confined space, a test should be made to determine the presence of toxic gases.
- The OOD shall be notified before a confined space is entered.
- A man entering a confined space must wear a lifeline and be tended by a competent observer equipped to render assistance.
- Depending on the space and conditions a gas mask may be worn. Some gases will render a person helpless without his realizing it.
- When painting in a confined space, a test lamp shall be kept burning. If the test lamp goes out, the space must be vacated immediately.
